How to optimize content for voice search in 2020

If you don’t optimize content for voice search you are missing out on a huge user behavior trend that is shaping how we approach content marketing.

According to Google, over 20% of the queries are voice searches. 

This shouldn’t surprise you since virtual assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home are getting more popular. 

Also, smartphones and search engines are getting better at recognizing our voice and what type of information we are looking for.

Google’s latest RankBrain and BERT algorithm updates improved even further on how Google understands our questions.

Since voice search is having such a high adoption rate, how do we think long term and optimize our content to better serve this rising trend? 

Well, here are a few tweaks that you can make to your texts in order to get your content discovered more easily.

According to Backlinko, simple text works better. After researching 10.000 voice search results, they found that the average Google voice search result is written at a 9th-grade level. 

Also, if you look at Google Home voice search guide that there is a big emphasis on the simplicity of sentences and words.

Text simplicity doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s one of Google’s ranking factors, but definitely Google likes displaying easy to understand texts as voice search results. 

Think about it, many times when we use voice search it’s fast and we are in a hurry so that’s why we naturally expect fast answers that we can understand immediately.

So when writing your new blog post, unless it’s really a medical research, make it more conversational with simplified sentences and easier to understand words.

Since content retention and quality are one of Google’s ranking factors, readability plays an important role, 

because people who consume content more easily will be more likely to stay on your page. 

If your website is based on WordPress, I suggest that you use Yoast plugin since they have a tool to analyze the reading difficulty of your content.

When writing a post or a page in WordPress scroll down at the bottom of the text and you’ll see the reading score which will show you how difficult your text is to read

Next, make your content longer. According to the same research, the average word count of a voice search result page is 2,312 words. 

Now Yes  this goes against the fact that the average voice search result is only 29 words.

So if Google displays only a short answer as a result of a voice search, why would you write such a long piece of content?

By having longer content, not only do you increase the chances of getting social shares, which is an important ranking factor and source of free traffic…

…but the search algorithm will better understand the meaning of your content and you’ll have more keywords in it for which you can potentially get discovered.

More content means more opportunities to include phrases that people search for. 

Next, use longer, natural and conversational phrases. This means that you need to implement one more step in your keyword research process.

Think about it, when you ask a question you ask it naturally like you would in any normal conversation. You won’t talk like a robot.

That is exactly why voice search queries tend to be longer than queries that we type manually.

To find keyword phrases with that long tail and conversational tone, go to and enter a keyword that is relevant to the topic that you are writing about.

It will give you a list of relevant phrases that people actually search for on Google and Bing, but that are structured in a more conversational manner.

Then, copy all of those keyword phrases into your keyword research tool to see the search volumes, and then simply make sure to include keyword phrases and questions that have some search volume naturally in your text. 

The final suggestion is to have frequently asked questions section in your posts. This is a nice little trick that you can implement in almost any niche, especially if you are writing a long and detailed post that covers a serious subject such as an ultimate or step by step guide.

According to the same research from Backlinko, almost 3% of voice search results came from FAQ sections.

This means that the structure of the content is important. And there isn’t a better way to structure important keyword phrases than in the form of frequently asked questions. 

As I said, plug the keywords that you found on into your keyword research tool and see which phrases and questions people ask the most. 

Then, simply at the end of the post write a list of questions that contain the most searched for phrases that you found on answer the public. Then, of course, simply answer every question.

Guys keep in mind that these are just small tweaks that you can make to your content in order to improve the chances of ranking higher and getting more traffic. 

In order to rank higher on Google, you still need to have a solid SEO foundation, meaning to have domain authority, fast loading website, secure https pages, social shares, quality content, etc.
